Quick Food Allergy Facts

  • It is reported that 8% of U.S. children have a food allergy, some of them severe enough to be considered life threatening. Approximately 125 people die in the U.S. every year from food allergies. Peanut allergy is the most common cause of death from food allergies. There are even kids with multiple food allergies. One of the kids I met through the peanut allergy study I am in, is severely allergic to more than 5 different foods!

    Approximately 90% of all food allergy reactions can be attributed to the following foods: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat. Since 2006, food makers have been required to clearly state on food labels (after or adjacent to the list of ingredients) whether their products contain these eight most common food allergens. But you can not rely on food labels alone. Did you know that "arachis" is an alternative term for peanut or that many restaurants add peanut butter to their sauces or chili as a thickening agent?

We also evacuated to Dallas (Irving to be exact), and I had the same worries. For the first time, we booked a suite that had a refrigerator, microwave, and a sink. We also brought LOTS of safe food. My biggest panic was to depend on restaurants especially in an unfamiliar city. Everything went fine and we did eat out a couple of times. One night we went to Olive Garden (one of our staples) and when we got there, I realized I didn't have his bag (which included his benedryl and epipen). I felt like such a horrible mom and my brain had been soooo frazzled with the stress of the hurricane, evacuating, and everything. Good thing the restaurant wasn't far because I quickly went back to get it while the rest of our group stayed at the restaurant. That was the longest 5 minutes as my son had already taken his first couple bites! So scary! Thank God - we didn't need it anyway. I hope we don't have to evacuate again any time soon. It was so stressful!

Glad you did ok with the hurricane. We have eaten at Red Robin 2 times and had positive experiences both times. As with any restaurant chain, I am sure each location is different, but both times, the manager was involved in preparation and/or delivery of our PA son's meal. I was so impressed with their allergy menu the 1st time, I called and "interviewed" their spokesperson! (http://www.foodallergybuzz.com/2008/07/food-allergy-friendly-restaurant-tip.html) Red Robin really seems to "get it" where other restaurants amazingly fail to even attempt to be "food allergy friendly".
